Introducing CIMA

The Institute was founded in 1919 with the title 'The Institute of Costs and Works Accountants', on the realisation that the traditional methods of accountancy were unable to provide the range of information required in order to plan and manage modern business.

In November 1986, the Institute changed its name to 'The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants' considering that the change would further the fulfilment of the objects for which the Institute was granted a Royal Charter by giving due public recognition to the importance of management accountancy and to the high professional standards of its members. In December 1995, members of CIMA were granted the right to use the description of Chartered Management Accountant.

CIMA Qualification Structure

The CIMA professional qualification, revised in 2010, consists of ten exams (including a final case study). CIMA candidates will gain expertise in the following three main areas: management accounting, business management and financial management. The three exams at the Operational level introduce students to business ethics, financial forecasting, reporting and general marketing. This level is very helpful to understand how companies operate and organize their departments. The three exams  at the Management level focus on specific topics such as project management and analysis of financial statements. Budgeting is also offered at this level. Finally, at the strategic level, candidates will be required to use the knowledge dispensed at the Operational level and Management level to cover change management practices, performance evaluation methodologies and strategy design and  implementation. CIMA concludes with its last part, entitled T4, the test of professional competence: you will be required to have completed at least 3 years of relevant work experience and to have passed a final case study to pass T4.
